Four months after stepping down as CEO of Expedia Group, Peter Kern has resigned from the company’s Board of Directors and his role as vice chairman.
The company filed the news with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday, noting that the move was effective immediately. The board also removed a seat – taking its size from 13 to 12 directors total.
The decision came as a result of “the speed and success of the Company’s recent management transition,” the filing reads, referencing changes that have happened since early February when Kern announced he was leaving the company and Ariane Gorin was named as his successor. She officially took over CEO duties at the company’s Expedia Explore event in May.
Expedia Group declined to comment on Kern’s resignation.

The news comes as somewhat of a surprise given that when he announced his departure as CEO in February, Kern spoke of staying on a vice chairman.
“As vice chairman, I look forward to working closely with Ariane and our leadership team as they continue the momentum we have built and realize on all the opportunity that our transformation has created,” he said.
This is only the latest in executive level shifts from Expedia Group – which not only saw the departure of Kern as CEO and the entrance of Gorin this spring, but the exit of chief technology officer Rathi Murthy due to a “violation of company policy.” Expedia Group has not yet announced a new CTO.
